republicans and democrats to both get on board. also, really special person we met. this is richard blanco. he is a 44-year-old and he is making history tomorrow. he's cuban american. he is openly gay. and he is the one to deliver the poem in the inauguration. we had a chance to talk about what it's going to be like and a little bit about the nerves. here's how he deserved cribed i me. >> writing the poem, that took weeks and that's all i did around the clock. and through the process of working with the pic and all that so once i got to d.c. on thursday, the poem was done, practiced and really since i have been here it's more about just sort of more official duties and whatnot and interviews and things like that but, you know, there's -- it's interesting because there's something to be said about the spontaneity of the art, as well. i have rehearsed the poem, looked at it several times. >> reporter: he's a little nervous. i have to admit. he admits it himself. this is the largest audience he's ever delivered a poem. he is a teacher, as well. all of his students very proud of him and he will ha
. >> richard blanco will be the first ever latino poet to read the poem. he grew up in miami and born in spain. he lives in maine working as a civil engineer and author. he says he feels kektded to president obama as the two have similar life stories. >> the life story that always resonated with me. i can imagine him as a child negotiating cultural questions as well as i've had as a cuban american. the whole question of where do i belong? what's home? >> now blanco will make history as the first latino and make history to be the first openly gay poet to recite the inauguration poem. >>> thousands of extra law enforcement officers are on duty for inauguration events. >> many got their marching orders within the last 24 hours. >> pro -- >>> hundreds of police officers traveled to d.c. and were sworn in as deputy u.s. marshals. this was a ceremony at american university's bender arena yesterday. they got a security briefing and reminders on what to look out for in the crowds. >>> the lines are starting to build at metro stations around the area. >> thompson is at the north metro station. tisch a,
richard blanco reads an original poem written just specifically for this occasion. we're very excited that richard blanco will be joining us. he is the youngest-ever inaugural poet, the first hgbt -- lgbt inaugural poet. reverend louis leon will be overseeing the traditional st. johns service that kicks off the president's day will be offering the benediction, and the ceremony will end with beyonce singing the national anthem. one quick thing on the bibles. obviously, these are very, very historic bibles and very symbolic bibles as we head into the 150th anniversary of the emancipation proclamation and the 50th anniversary of the march on washington in 1963. with that, i'd like to hand it over to our partners at jtf to talk about the inaugural parade which will take place after the lunch that matt discussed. ma'am? >> thank you. as they said, i'm colonel michelle roberts from joint task force national capitol region, and our task force has responsibility for planning and coordinating all of the military ceremonial support for the inaugural activities. um, once the luncheon is complete
clark son, "my country tis of thee." beyonce yet to come. richard blanco will read his work of the day. and beyonce will play them into lunch, inside the capitol. lester holt is at the front of the capitol for us. lester, crowd is filling in behind you back there. >> it sure is. what a spectacular vantage point we have. the marine band playing right now. some of the dignitaries and vips taking their seats, including the governs who are just over my shoulder. members of the senate and house will be on the stage, along with the president's cabinet. diplomatic dignitaries and two forms presidents, president carter and clinton will be here, both president bushs will not be ascending this inauguration. things, as you say, should get under way about 11:30. the president and vice president will be introduced sometime after 11:00. we would expect them to take their seats near the front of the stage. the families, of course, will be with them. what is more stunning than the view behind me is the view that the president will have as he looks up the mall at thousands and thousands of people. whil
